Thank you for your interest in adopting a retired Thoroughbred from Run for the Ribbons Inc. Our goal is to successfully find the best possible home for our horses. To help us meet that goal, please complete this application to the best of your ability. Your accurate responses will also help us match you with a horse that meets your requirements.
Applicant Requirements: Personal
- Must be at least 18 years of age; if younger, a parent must be added to the application and must sign the adoption contract if approved.
- Make no less than $25,000 a year. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
- Live within the United States.
- Have owned a horse before. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
- Must be working with a trainer if a beginner to intermediate rider.
- Must have at least two non-family personal references that are aware of the applicant’s horse experience and that have been to the facility where the horse will be located.
- Must have a vet reference that has been to the facility where the horse will be located within the last year. If not, a farm call will be requested of the applicant. Boarding facility’s regular vet does not necessarily have to be the applicant’s current vet.
Facility
- If the applicant owns the farm (private facility), must have at least one acre per horse.
- Stall must be at least 12 x 12 unless the horse will be primarily turned out.
- If there are no stalls, there must be adequate shelter in a pasture large enough to accommodate the horse(s). For example, a run-in for two horses should be at least 12 x 24.
- All Thoroughbreds must have access to a stall if recently off the track and cannot be pasture boarded until they have successfully transitioned to life off the track. Time varies for each horse but should be a minimum of one month.
- The following fencing is acceptable:
- Wood rail / split rail (at least two rails high)
- Woven wire / horse fence / no climb fence / mesh fence / field fence, etc.
- White vinyl / poly-tape (at least 6" wide and at least three rails high)
- Electric tape / electric smooth-wire (at least four strands high)
- Barbed wire is only acceptable at the top (one strand) to prevent leaning.
