Pasture Pros

MEET OUR PASTURE PROS

Our beloved “Pasture Pros,”are our retirees who have been granted lifelong sanctuary at Cedar Lock Farm for various reasons. Run for the Ribbons Inc. is committed to providing sanctuary horses with a true forever home, a safe, peaceful place where they can live out the rest of their lives with love, care, and without worry. Some horses may never be rideable again—but that doesn’t mean their journey ends. These gentle souls will soon take on new roles as stars of our upcoming equine-assisted learning program, Run For The Ribbons Equine Interactive Education Program (EIEP), which will make equine connections accessible virtually anywhere. They will continue to help and inspire people through the power of the horse-human connection.

 Rockstar Cowboy (2009)
Rockstar Cowboy, aka Cowboy, was our first “rescue” OTTB. He arrived on April 12, 2018, looking like a skeleton with an old serious injury to his left front pastern, causing it to slide forward and making him only pasture sound for the rest of his life. But Cowboy didn’t let that stop him from becoming the head honcho of his field. One day, Cowboy decided he was going to show the dogs who was boss. As they ran around, barking and playing, Cowboy strutted over, his belly jiggling with every step. With a mischievous glint in his eye, he started chasing the dogs, who were utterly confused by this unexpected turn of events. The dogs scattered, tails between their legs, while Cowboy trotted triumphantly, his mane flowing in the wind. Now, Cowboy spends his days ruling the pasture, fat, happy, and healthy, with the dogs knowing better than to mess with the boss. VIEW EQUIBASE PROFILE»

With lifetime earnings of $334,993 from 30 career starts, he was quite the star. Now, instead of racing, he’s racing to the best spot in the pasture with his best friend, Shim. In sunny Morriston, Florida, Story to Tell has embraced the retired life with gusto. He spends his days lounging in the sun, occasionally pretending to be a racehorse again by sprinting to the feed bucket. Shim, his BFF, often joins him in these “races,” though they usually end up in a leisurely stroll. Story to Tell has become the local celebrity, known for his dramatic reenactments of his racing days, complete with exaggerated gallops and triumphant whinnies. He may not be winning graded stakes anymore, but he’s definitely winning hearts in Morriston!

STORY TO TELL.
Shim (2014) Shim has had quite the journey with us. Initially surrendered by an owner from a local thoroughbred farm in Ocala, Florida, in 2019, he was quickly adopted due to his charm, beauty, and personality. Shim had a great start to his retraining career in eventing, but it was cut short by a terrible diagnosis of Kissing Spines, leading to another owner surrender in 2021. Now, Shim spends his days hanging out with the old folks in his field and playing with his buddy, Story to Tell. Despite his setbacks, Shim has found his place and continues to bring joy to everyone around him with his playful spirit and endearing personality.

Mambo Appeal (2006)
Mambo Appeal was transferred to us in 2023 after the dispersal of Thoroughbred Retirement of Tampa (TROT). Since then, he has become a beloved member of our farm. Mambo has a particular fondness for water and can often be found near the water tanks or lounging under a tree, enjoying the shade. One particularly hot day, he decided to take matters into his own hooves and turned the water trough into his personal swimming pool. There he was, standing knee-deep in water, looking as pleased as punch while the other horses watched in bewilderment.

His playful nature and love for water make him a joy to watch.
